Graduate Students

Your focus on, and understanding of, the U.S. South is truly innovative.

You think creatively about narrative power, and you communicate across disciplines. Your work sparks truth-telling conversations that are necessary to move the region and nation forward. Your commitment to listening as both a skill and an ethical value is exactly the type of scholarship we are looking to encourage.

Funding Opportunities

Summer Funding Opportunities

Emerging Scholar Award

Interested incoming applicants to graduate programs within the College of Arts & Sciences can request to be nominated by their Department for an award recognizing their leadership and promise in their field of study.

Southern Futures Graduate Fellowship

The Southern Futures Graduate Fellows are an interdisciplinary group of graduate students working to understand the promise and perils of the South and imagine a future where all southern communities can flourish.

Student Profile: Moriah James

Moriah James received a Southern Futures Award to pursue her research, which will involve interviews with some of her family members. Although COVID-19 prohibited her from returning to Green Valley this past summer, she is conducting interviews remotely with residents.

In spring 2021, James received a prestigious National Science Foundation Graduate Research Fellowship to support doctoral research, an ethnography “on the Black elite and Black elite identity formation.”
