Undergraduate Student Funding Opportunities

Deadline extended! Applications due Monday, March 27, 2023

The Southern Oral History Program and Southern Futures are partnering to offer a single online application for summer funding at The Center for the Study of the American South.

Please use the application at the bottom of this page to apply for either, or both funding opportunities.

Only one letter of recommendation is required for your application, even if you are applying for multiple opportunities. Your advisor can learn more and upload a letter of support here, or email it directly to SouthernFutures@unc.edu.

All recipients of summer funding will be required to submit a mid-summer progress report of what has been accomplished so far, and a plan for work yet to be done. By the end of the summer award period, recipients will submit an impact statement and will share their findings at an event at The Center for the Study of the American South in the fall of 2023.

SOHP Undergraduate Research Planning GrantsĀ

The Southern Oral History Program (SOHP) Undergraduate Summer Awards provide startup funding for four undergraduates in the amount of $2,500 each to support preliminary oral history planning and preparation work resulting in the identification of oral history fieldwork or research you will further explore beyond the summer award period.

The Southwind Southern Futures Fellows Award

The Southwind Southern Futures Fellows Award provides funding of $5,000 for mentored research, community service, or creative projects that use the arts or humanities to work for justice, equity, and possibility in southern communities. This funding can support living and travel expenses associated with an approved project.
